“Do not ever go in Madam’s room.” Shudder has revealed an official US trailer for Good Madam, a thriller from South Africa that initially premiered on the 2021 Toronto Movie Competition final fall. After taking part in at different fests together with Incredible Fest & AFI Fest, Shudder might be streaming this one in July. Residues of apartheid-era home servitude confront legacies of colonial land theft in South African auteur Jenna Cato Bass’s daring horror-satire. Tsidi, a single mom, is pressured to maneuver in together with her estranged mom Mavis, a live-in home employee caring obsessively for her catatonic white “Madam”. As Tsidi tries to heal her household, a sinister spectre begins to stir. Starring Chumisa Cosa as Tsidi, together with Nosipho Mtebe, Kamvalethu Jonas Raziya, Sanda Shandu, Khanyiso Kenqa, Chris Gxalaba, Sizwe Ginger Lubengu, and Siya Sikawuti. Critiques say the movie as “a masterclass in how horror can communicate to race and inequality,” the place servitude is “a terrifying, highly effective & unrelentingly enduring mode of postcolonial possession”. Have a look.
